At Home in Newark

At Home In Newark: Stories from the Queer Newark Oral History Project tells the stories of how LGBTQ Newarkers have claimed space for themselves in bars, balls, houses of worship, street corners, community centers, and artistic venues in the face of poverty, violence, illness, racism and discrimination. Through their activism, creative expression, and determination, they have made Newark their home.”

At Home in Newark was an exhibit curated and designed by Rutgers University - Newark students. I collaborated to conceptualize, design, curate and build a multimedia art installation.

Breaking the Barrier

Language. It’s the way that people communicate with one another. All around the world, there are thousands of languages used today. Although some of them have died out, many others continue to evolve and play an important role in people’s lives and culture. “Breaking the Barrier” is a three-part narrative that focuses on language and the individual, and is based on my survey of one hundred people, and twenty separate interviews.

Everyone knows at least one language; some know many more. Language can be a “barrier,” making it difficult for people to communicate with one another effectively. However, language is a central element to any culture, and the individuality and diversity of language cannot be underestimated. By learning about other people’s experiences and other languages, we can start to break the barrier and truly understand one another.

This video is about words and phrases that get lost in translation from one language to English.
